Fusine Lakes: Daytrip from Villach

Fusine Lakes: Daytrip from Villach

The Fusine lakes are amazingly beautiful and they are one of my favorite spots I have found since moving to Austria. Located on the border of Austria and Italy, the Fusine lakes are close to Villach and make for a perfect day trip. I first visited the Fusine lakes in Spring this year and I have already visited them 5 times already. It is an excellent hiking spot and is easy enough for hikers of all levels to enjoy.

The Fusine lakes (Laghi di Fusine in Italian and Lacs de Fusine in German) consists of two lakes, Lago Inferiore and Lago Superiore. The lakes are surrounded by a mountain amphitheater with amazing Alpine peaks looming over the blue waters. The lakes are renowned for being excellent examples of Alpine lakes. The crystalline waters can range from dark blue to an amazing turquoise on clear days. Whenever we have guests visiting, we make sure to bring them to the Fusine lakes due to their beauty.

Of all the seasons, my favorite time to visit the Fusine lakes is in Autumn. The forests around the lake are alive with Autumn color and the trail is covered in bright orange and yellow leaves. We decided to pack a picnic last weekend to enjoy the afternoon with a hike in nature. The drive from Villach to the Fusine Lakes is only 30 minutes! So it makes for a perfect nature getaway.

The contrast of the yellow leaves and the turquoise lake is brilliant. We took longer than usual to hike around the Lago Superiore so we could enjoy the views. We were lucky and it was a very clear day for October, the water was unbelievable. It is best to visit the lakes on a clear day so you can get the full view of the mountains and the colors of the lakes. Fusine Lakes: Daytrip from Villach

The first lake is Lago Inferiore and it is easy to walk around. We prefer to visit Lago Superiore because the trail is less crowded and duh, “superior” is in the name. It is possible to take a roundtrip hike around both lakes. The trails are well marked with plenty of signs.

Have you ever been to Lake Fusine? Whenever I see a picture of it, I think about jumping in the car to get there. We plan on visiting in Winter to see the mountains covered in snow. I can already imagine how beautiful it will be!
