Happy Thanksgiving from Austria! We hosted a Friendsgiving with some of our international friends last weekend since everyone has to work on Thursday. This is my first international Thanksgiving, and it was a wonderful treat to be able to start a new Thanksgiving tradition by sharing the meal with our friends in Villach.
My husband and I spent all day cooking on Sunday preparing for the big meal. Luckily, we were able to find most of the ingredients needed to have an authentic Thanksgiving meal. We prepared mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce (we found real cranberries!), stuffing, green bean casserole, sweet potatoes, apple pie, apple berry cheesecake, dinner rolls, two roast chickens, and a turkey roulade. We were unable to find a whole turkey to roast, but friends of ours recommended that we contact a butcher in advance next time to arrange for a full bird.
As we were sitting around the dinner table, I truly felt grateful to be able to share my Thanksgiving meal with such wonderful people. Together we have traveled to new places, learned about one another’s cultures, and shared many a delicious beer. This year has been difficult, but without these fantastic people, it would have been a much more difficult year. I cannot begin to express the depth of my gratitude, but a big shout out to everyone who has made my first year as an expat a memorable one.
Wherever you are, I am wishing you the happiest of Thanksgivings. May your day be filled with gratitude and shared with loved ones.
