Celebrating One Year in Austria

Celebrating one year in Austria - Hello and Hallo blog

I made it! I have officially been an expat living in Austria for one year. I feel like I should throw myself a party for making it through this year, but for now, I will just have a mini blog post party – woot woo! yay! dance party! – glad I got that out of my system. It has been a year full of travel, beer and sauerkraut, new friendships, mountain lakes and snow, and so. much. learning.

Aside from learning some German and how Austrian daily life works, I have learned a lot about myself.  I have learned that I am a lot stronger than I had previously thought, that I am bold, that I am adaptive, and that I am optimistic. I have also learned that I am garbage at German. So there you have it, lots of lessons – ha! But all kidding aside, this year has meant a lot to me and it has simultaneously been my best year (hello travel!) and my worst year (hello unemployment!). Would I do it all again? Definitely, even with all of the highs and lows of the year, I know that it has been worthwhile (please review the song “Audition” for further explanation).

As I begin my second year in Austria, I feel a little bit wiser, a little bit braver, and a whole lot more optimistic. I still do not know what the future holds, but I do feel more confident in my ability to handle anything that may come way. So bring on the German classes! Bring on the inevitable social faux pas I will make! Bring on the ice I will slip and fall on! And bring on the beer bitte!

Hi we arrived to Austria 4 months ago. We are French but were in NY for 4 years before arriving to Vienna so we see our new life with two pairs of glasses: French and American! Good luck for year 2!
