Velden am Wörthersee
We had a great time walking around the resort town of Velden am Wörther See last weekend to take in the summer sun. The Wörther See is the largest lake in Carinthia and is a popular summer holiday destination. Since we live close to the Wörther See we decided to pop by for the day to walk around the town and see what it has to offer. After seeing the beautiful resorts, the clear blue water of the lake, and stuffing my face with cake, I can definitely say that Velden am Wörther See is worth visiting.
One of the most noticeable buildings in the town is the large Schloss Velden resort located right on the lake. Once the location of a Renaissance castle, the Schloss Velden is a beautiful hotel that was built in 1892 and was a popular luxury destination for Austrian celebrities. It is still in operation today and hosts a gourmet restaurant that I am dying to try.
After walking around the lake promenade, we journeyed into town in search of an afternoon treat. There are lots of cafes, bars, shops, and a casino to explore, so it was easy to stay busy for the afternoon. Ultimately, we found our way to Politzky bakery for cake and melanges. Politzky has been making cakes since 1937 and has a wide range of sweet treats to pick from. We opted for a strawberry and almond torte and a slice of the tempting lime and raspberry cake – we were not disappointed.
If you find yourself near Velden am Wörther See in the summer, I recommend stopping by and spending a relaxing afternoon. If you are considering a longer holiday on the Wörther See, check out the Felden tourism website for tips on planning your holiday (in Deutsch only).
