Villach Street Art Festival: Straßenkunstfestival
One of the things I love about living in Austria is how much communities take advantage of good weather, it feels like there is always something to do in the Summer. This week my city hosted its 23rd annual Street Art Festival (Straßenkunstfestival in Deutsch). The festival takes place in the historic city center of Villach and consists of more than 100 performing acts from 10 countries taking to the streets to share their art. The performances cover a broad range, with everything from thrilling fire dancers to zany clowns.
I decided to spend my afternoon at the street art festival by slowly making my way around the Hauptplatz and taking in all of the antics of the day. I particularly enjoyed the omnipresence of the unicycle in many of the routines, there is something so impressive about people delicately balancing on one wheel. I stopped by a local stall selling fresh pretzels as an afternoon treat and was very satisfied with the speck (thick cut bacon) pretzel I selected. I was definitely impressed by the festival, it was nice to be out in the community and take in the arts. If you find yourself passing through Villach during the festival, I highly recommend you stop by the city center to check it out!
